Car of the future Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion debuted in early 2015 at the CES Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The concept looks very unusual and cannot but arouse admiration.
This fully autonomous luxury sedan is 5220mm long, 2018mm wide and 1524mm high. Wheelbase – as much as 3610 mm. To provide easy access to the spacious interior, the car doors open at an angle of 90 degrees, and there are no B-pillars at all.
Access to the car is exclusively "digital" – the concept recognizes any mobile device of the owner (smartphone or tablet), opens the door in front of him and allows him to activate the main functions.
The cabin has four swivel bucket seats and a movable display table in the center of the cabin.
The instrument panel is equipped with six touch screens that form a digital living room.
Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion presented as a helper for man. It scans the environment using radar, stereo cameras and ultrasonic sensors and makes decisions in certain situations. If necessary, it draws people's attention to objects outside (pedestrians or vehicles). When approaching a turn or readiness to change lanes, the car warns with flashing light signals in the cabin. A simplified digital landscape model is displayed on the side screens, synchronized with the real situation (mountains in the distance, ups and downs, coastline).
Conceptual Mercedes is able to address the outside world. A set of multi-colored LED strips on its body shows that the car is ready to start or slow down. For drivers of following vehicles, inscriptions are displayed (for example, “stop”, “slow traffic”). All the same LED blocks change color depending on the mode (autonomous or driver-controlled).
Mercedes-Benz F 015 is also equipped with a laser projector that displays a virtual zebra in front of a person standing on the side of the road. At the same time, the car stops and voice invites the pedestrian to cross the road. During braking, the projector shows the predicted stopping point on the road.
The Mercedes-Benz F 015 is driven by two electric motors on the rear axle with a peak power of 136 horsepower (100 kW each). This is enough to get from zero to hundreds in 6,7 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 km/h.
The energy source is an electrochemical generator that generates electricity from hydrogen. Its reserve is enough to drive a distance of up to 900 km, and a rechargeable battery provides another 200 km.
The body of the concept is a combination of high-strength steels, aluminum and several grades of reinforced plastic, including carbon fiber panels. The safety cage is designed to reliably protect not only people on impact, but also narrow elongated hydrogen cylinders integrated into the floor.
The developers claim that Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion can be programmed to find a parking space or send it empty to a certain point in the city, for example, to pick up someone.
