The Bugatti La Voiture Noire hypercar was built in a single copy by order of a wealthy fan of the brand. At the heart of the "Black Car" (as its name is translated from French) is the technology of the Chiron coupe. But the designer Etienne Salome painted the look in imitation of the historical Type 57 SC Atlantic model, which was released in 1936-1938 in the amount of only four pieces.

Needless to say, Bugatti knows how to surprise. It would seem, what to strive for after Veyron? However, we were introduced to the Chiron. Okay, but where next? It turns out that there is no limit to perfection. More precisely, Bugatti once again managed to break through this limit, setting a new bar for everyone else. In Geneva, the company presented a one-of-a-kind hypercar – Bugatti La Voiture Noire.

This is a modern interpretation of Jean Bugatti's personal Type 57 SC Atlantic, which went missing during World War II, a stunning grand tourer built in Molsheim.

This car is a nod to La Voiture Noire, owned by Jean, the son of company founder Ettore Bugatti. Jean Bugatti took an active part in the activities of his father's company, being a talented constructor and designer. He helped create the famous Type 41 Royale, he also owns the authorship of the Type 57 model in several body types (including the Atlantic, one of which went to the developer himself).

The Atlantic coupe is one of the most famous creations of Jean Bugatti, as well as an example of the creation of a family of models on the same basis with unusual bodies, which is followed by the modern Bugatti company.

The current version is the most expensive new car ever sold. With a price tag of 11 million euros before taxes – who would doubt it. During the presentation of the car at the Geneva Motor Show, Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann said the car was sold for 16,5 million euros including taxes.

Three examples of Type 57 SC Atlantic were sold to customers, and these machines have survived to this day. But traces of Jean Bugatti's personal car were lost after 1938. The firm writes that it is still unclear whether he sold this masterpiece to one of his acquaintances or simply moved it to some other region of France, further west, before the German troops occupied Alsace.

With a handcrafted carbon fiber bodywork, La Voiture Noire remains on trend with recent Bugatti models like the Divo, but takes exclusivity to a whole new level. It has the same 8,0-liter W16 quad-turbo with 1500 horsepower and 1600 lb-ft of torque as the Chiron, Chiron Sport, and Divo.

According to experts, if that copy of the Atlantic Jean were found today, it would cost more than 100 million euros. Against this background, for a modern interpretation of La Voiture Noire, the company asked for a little – some 11 million euros. That, however, is more than double the price of another special model, limited to 40 units, the Bugatti Divo, and four times as much as the base Chiron.

If there is a car brand in the world whose six exhaust pipes don't look over the top, it's Bugatti. An oversized LED brake light strip makes the unique hypercar appear wider than it really is, and under it is an illuminated 'BUGATTI' lettering in case you don't know what it is.

Chiron's two twin trapezoidal tailpipes "transformed" into four independent ones on the Sport versions (they are round) and Divo (there are square), and in La Voiture Noire there are already six of them. The creators of the model say that "six" is a hint at 16 cylinders. But 16 nozzles at the stern, apparently, were considered too much.

The horseshoe-shaped grille protrudes more forward than ever, and the LED headlights sit atop the wheel arches.

It is not known who paid a small fortune to acquire the unique car – Stefan Winkelmann said only that it now belongs to "an ardent fan of Bugatti" (who would doubt it).

Oddly enough, the company did not show the interior of the hypercar during the premiere in Geneva, nor in the photos and renderings that you can see below. We can only assume that the interior of the exclusive hypercar is certainly significantly more luxurious than the Chiron and Divo.

It is interesting to compare the characteristics of an ancestor and an heir. The Type 57 SC Atlantic coupe was equipped with a 3.3 in-line 200 hp engine, which allowed the streamlined car to develop more than 200 km/h. Modification of the Atlantic GT with a redesigned body showed 220 at all. Eighty years ago, not many models could boast of such a maximum speed.

The modern Bugatti La Voiture Noire is equipped with the same engine as a simple Chiron: a supercharged W16 8.0 with a return of 1500 hp. and 1600 N•m. Based on the original Chiron, you can predict acceleration to hundreds in 2,5 seconds and a top speed of 420 km/h. However, when describing Noir, the company does not indicate the dynamics.

Will we ever see this car outside the walls of the pavilion of the Geneva Motor Show? We hope, but you should not count on it too much, given that the cost of a car will only grow every year.

The car, presented by the French luxury brand in Geneva, embodied the thesis that true luxury is individuality.

On the basis of Chiron, in addition to La Voiture Noire and Divo, a Chiron Sport modification was created, and most recently, a 20 ans Bugatti limited to 110 copies was added to this family, dedicated, as it is easy to understand, to the 110th anniversary of the company. Meanwhile, January 15 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Jean Bugatti. So the new La Voiture Noire is a great way to celebrate both of these anniversaries.
