We continue our journey through the most unusual beaches in the world. If you have been to one of these beaches, leave a comment about it at the end of the article. We wish you a pleasant viewing!

1. The most extreme beach, the Netherlands

Maho Beach is located on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten (part of the Netherlands), in its southern part. This extreme beach is famous due to the fact that the airport runway adjoins it closely, so that landing and taking off planes fly only 10–20 meters above the heads of vacationers.

The beach is about 300 meters long and only 10–20 meters wide. It is completely devoid of vegetation, as it is regularly exposed to strong air currents from airliners. This often causes strong and unexpected waves on the coast, which attracts windsurfers and skimboarders here.

On average, only every 4th aircraft landing here can create a strong gust of wind with their jet engines. Despite difficult landing conditions, not a single crash on Maho Beach has yet been recorded.

There are several cafes and eateries on the beach, which have a loudspeaker that warns vacationers about the arrival of the next plane and transmits radio communications from airport controllers and pilots of approaching aircraft. Boards are also placed along the beach, on which the schedule of takeoffs and landings of aircraft is written in chalk.

Vacationers in the central part of the beach may be in danger of injury or even death, which the administration honestly warns about, since the speed of air flows from aircraft jet engines can reach 160 km/h, but many people deliberately ignore these warnings in order to experience the thrill.

On October 16, 2008, the beach was badly damaged by Hurricane Omar, which destroyed several cafes and other structures and made Maho completely rocky, blowing away all the sand, which then had to be brought here and refilled with the beach.

An interesting fact: in 2009-2011, the Austrian photographer Josef Hoflener, who took black-and-white pictures of low-flying aircraft, rested on Maho Beach. These works were included in his book The Jetliner: The Complete Works.

Sad fact: On July 12, 2017, as Caribbean Airlines Flight 457 took off from the airport, a 57-year-old woman from New Zealand died as a result of a jet explosion (a phenomenon of rapid air movement created by aircraft jet engines, especially during takeoff). The woman was holding on to the fence at the end of the runway when the wind blew it away, hitting her head on the concrete.

2. Hidden Beach, Mexico

The hidden beach is located right inside the rocks of one of the Marietas Islands in Mexico. In shape, it resembles a huge natural pool. The sandy part of the beach is located just under the hole, in the sun, and a low arch of the cave hangs over the water column. Due to this, the temperature here always remains slightly lower than on the surface, which is very good, given the location of Mexico, where, due to the proximity of the equator, summer temperatures can reach +45º C.

It is curious that this place, which has already been ranked among the most unusual beaches in the world, is not of natural origin at all. The caves were formed by explosions as a result of military tests that were carried out in Mexico at the beginning of the 20th century. Only in the late 60s, thanks to international protests initiated by the famous submariner Jacques Cousteau, the government decided to assign the status of a National Park to the Marietas Islands.

This beach is also called Playa del Amor (pronounced Playa del Amor), which translates from Spanish as the Beach of Love. This name arose thanks to the Internet – when travelers in love increasingly began to post their photos taken on this unusual beach on popular social networks, talking about the beauty and sharing their impressions, the name arose by itself and was fixed forever.

Hidden Beach is a great place for diving and snorkeling, where you can admire rare tropical fish, sea turtles and coral reefs. You can get here only by water, on a rented boat. Therefore, some inaccessibility and seclusion of the beach attracts couples in love and just tourists who appreciate a relaxing holiday in the picturesque beauty.

However, by the time the tidal wave hits, it would be better for the brave to already expect the return of the sea on the shore. Such a strange phenomenon happens regularly twice a day throughout the year.

4. The cleanest beach in the world, Australia

Whitehaven Beach is a unique 7 km beach along the coastline of Whitsunday Island in Australia. Whitehaven Beach is known for its crystal white quartz sands and turquoise waters. This sand is 98% pure silica and, unlike regular sand, does not retain heat, making it comfortable to walk barefoot on a hot day.

It is strange that the local rocks do not contain silica, so it has been suggested that the white sands were brought to the beach by the prevailing sea currents over millions of years. This sand is very fine and can damage electronic equipment such as phones and cameras, although it is good for polishing jewelry.

Whitsunday Island itself has the status of a national park and is protected by the state. This made it possible to preserve the original purity and nature here. Whitehaven Beach was awarded Queensland's Cleanest Beach in the 2008 Keep Australia Beautiful Beach Award. In July 2010, the beach was named the best sustainable beach in the world by CNN. Dogs are not allowed on the beach and smoking is prohibited here.

Tourists and locals alike visit Whitehaven Beach to swim and enjoy the bright white sand. The only drawback of the island is the lack of hotels, the construction of which is prohibited by law here. However, tourists can stay here for the night by booking a camp in the National Parks.

The pigs are fed from passing yachts, and if the boat gets close enough to the shore, the pigs can jump in on their own, begging for food. As of 2019, the pig population was between 50 and 60 pigs. Several stray cats and goats can also be found on the island.

There is no reliable information about the origin of pigs on the island. According to one version, the pigs were once left here by the sailors of one of the ships to pick them up and eat them on the way back, but that ship never returned to the island. According to another, the pigs survived the shipwreck, and the strongest of them managed to swim to the island.

There are opinions that pigs were brought to the Bahamas specifically to lure tourists here (there are other islands with swimming pigs in the Bahamas). Currently, the pigs are fed by residents of neighboring islands and tourists. Some people claim to have been bitten by a pig while visiting the island.
