France is one of the most famous countries in Europe, and Paris is perhaps the most famous city in the world. It is rightfully called the "City of Light", but not at all because of the abundant lighting: after all, any other modern metropolis could be called that. No, the thing is that the capital of France for many centuries was the center of education, art and philosophy.

If you haven't been to Paris yet, we invite you to take a virtual tour of the main attractions of this amazing city with a 360° view using the wonderful AirPano service.

The word "Paris" comes from the Latin "Civitas Parisiorium" – "city of Parisia": this was the name of the Celtic settlement on the site of the modern island of the City (now it is one of the two surviving islands of the Seine River in the center of the French capital and the oldest part of the city). Cite was already inhabited in ancient times, so the history of Paris can be traced back to those distant years.

Brilliant Paris was not always so. Back in the Middle Ages, even Kyiv confidently overshadowed it: for example, in the 11th century, the daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, Anna Yaroslavna, who married the French king, was terribly disappointed with the city. The heyday began in the 13th century and continues to this day, leading to the emergence of many of the most famous sights in Paris. Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre, Champs-Elysées, Moulin Rouge, La Défense, Pompidou Center, Eiffel Tower, Pont Alexandre III, Grand Palace, Les Invalides, Tuileries Garden, Musee d'Orsay, Place de la Concorde, Opera, Basilica of the Sacred Heart and much more, much more – all this adorns the capital of France, making it unlike any other city in the world.

Each sight of Paris has a story, the story of which would take more than one page. Here are just a few fun facts. So, the Moulin Rouge is not only the famous classic cabaret and one of the must-see places in Paris. It turns out that it was here that the world's first striptease was danced. This happened in 1894, and before that, in all the shady places, the girls performed dressed.

Or, for example, Notre Dame Cathedral (aka Notre Dame de Paris). The gigantic dimensions for those times (the height of the cathedral – 35 meters, length – 130 meters, width – 48 meters) were explained by the fact that, according to the plan, absolutely all the inhabitants of Paris should be placed in the cathedral. However, from the laying of the first stone to the final touch in the interior decoration, its creators took a century and a half. So by the end of construction, when the population of the city had increased markedly, the plan was no longer feasible. But this does not prevent Notre Dame from being the geographical and spiritual "heart" of Paris.

The Louvre is one of the largest museums in the world. It is located in the ancient royal palace, which, in turn, was built as a castle, able to withstand the Viking raids. And the famous Champs-Elysées in Paris are not "fields" in the truest sense of the word. This is a huge (1915 meters long and 70 meters wide) street. In the 16th century, there was generally a swamp here, where the French kings came to hunt ducks. The name was given during the French Revolution, in honor of Greek mythology. There, the "Champs Elysees" are the beautiful fields of the blessed in the afterlife on the banks of the Ocean River, where, at the end of mortal life, the heroes beloved by the gods fall. Now the only things that are "littered" with the fields are luxury shops and entertainment venues. In addition, there is another attraction of Paris here: the Arc de Triomphe, made in the antique style. It symbolizes the victory of the Great Army of Napoleon I.

Eiffel Tower...

Further, the text could not be continued. There is hardly a single person in the world who has not heard about this visiting card of Paris and does not know the basic facts about it. Moreover, we have already talked about this most visited and most photographed attraction in the world in detail here ☞. In what follows, we only note the following.

The Eiffel Tower is so original that even its color, close to the natural shade of bronze, is officially patented as "eiffel brown". It is so famous that its mini-copies are located in American Las Vegas, Chinese Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Romanian Slobozia, Danish Copenhagen, Bulgarian Varna, Kazakh Aktau and other cities.

She belongs to the people so much that her image has passed into the public domain (that is, the current owner of the Eiffel Tower, the city of Paris, does not receive royalties from the numerous sales of postcards, T-shirts and other souvenirs). True, her unique design lighting still managed to be protected by copyright, as a result of which any image of the illuminated "iron lady" can be used for commercial purposes only with the written permission of the service company "SETE".

By the way, modern Paris was designed for war – more precisely, for its "strategic goals", as Napoleon III said. Therefore, in the middle of the 19th century, the city was modernized for these tasks: while remaining beautiful, it had to be also ready for "warfare". As a result, many of the charming narrow streets of Paris were widened and straightened, and they remain so to this day.
