Angel Falls is located in the tropical forests of the Venezuelan state of Bolivar, in the Canaima National Park. Water overthrows from the top of the largest mountain Auyan-Tepui (its name means "mountain of the devil").

The total height of the waterfall is 979 meters, and the level of continuous water fall is 807 meters.

It should be mentioned that Venezuela is a unique country. On its territory there are many tepui.

Tepui are such strange-looking mountains with a truncated flat top, called "table mountains" (apparently, because they are even, like a table). These unique geological formations are located on the Guiana Highlands in South America, for the most part just on the territory of Venezuela.

Tepui for the most part stand in isolation from each other, towering above the jungle with hard-to-reach cliffs, which makes them home to unique plants and animals.

The history of the discovery of the Angel Falls is also connected with the tepui. It was discovered in the early 20th century by explorer Ernesto Sanchez La Cruz, but the falls were not widely known until the flight of James Angel.

In 1933, US pilot James Angel flew in search of ore deposits. According to local guides, he was looking for diamonds. This is fully justified by the fact that local natives in the time of James Angel constantly talked about stones that, according to their descriptions, could be mistaken for diamonds. In fact, the plateau from which Angel Falls falls is replete with quartz. On November 16, 1933, James Angel, during the flight, noticed a tepui called Auyan-Tepui, which attracted his attention. On October 9, 1937, he returned and tried to land the plane on Auyan Tepui, but during landing the plane was damaged when one of the landing gear burst.

As a result, James Angel and three of his companions, including his wife Marie, had to walk down this mountain. Their return to civilization took 11 days. News of their adventure spread very quickly, and the waterfall was named after him – "Angel Falls" (Spanish: Salto Ángel).

It is in tepui that you can find some of the highest waterfalls in the world. Imagine a kilometer-high cliff in dense jungle, with vertical sheer walls and flat tops. Therefore, water accumulates there after any, even a slight rain, and subsequently flows down numerous waterfalls.

Angel Falls is just one of them, but with the largest free fall: almost a kilometer, which allowed Angel to receive the status of the highest waterfall in the world. More full-flowing rivers also rush down from the same Auyan-Tepui mountain, but only 200–300 meters vertically.

Since the waterfalls in the local mountains are fed by rain, there is a serious need for careful travel planning in order to shoot them. In the dry season, Angel is a thin stream of water, and in the rainy season it is a full-fledged waterfall.

Our virtual trip to Angel Falls will take place just after the recent downpours.
