You've probably heard that every color has a meaning. And it's true: different colors affect our emotional state and our frame of mind in different ways. In the article, you will learn how blue, red, green, yellow, white, gray and black colors affect people, and where it is used.

Scientific research

Candidate of Psychological Sciences Bazyma B.A. in his monograph "Color and Psyche" notes that color has a mental and psychophysiological effect on a person throughout the development of civilization.

Already primitive people had certain associative links with colors: red – blood, black – suffering, evil, white – purity, goodness. Each color evoked certain emotions and influenced the mood.

The same is observed now. For example, in a study by Kathy Lamancus, Americans were asked to choose a favorite color and describe it. 35% of respondents chose blue and described it in much the same way: calm, peaceful, serene.

An experiment was conducted: lights were installed at Tokyo railway stations that emit blue light. Surprisingly, the crime rate has dropped. A similar experiment was carried out in Glasgow – the result was the same.

Now let's go directly to the consideration of primary colors.

Blue

This color evokes feelings of calmness, serenity, trust, fidelity and harmony. That is why the blue color was used as the main color for the design of the social networks Facebook and Twitter.

Also, this color promotes relaxation and relaxation. It will be easy for you to relax in a room with blue and blue tones. But at the same time, the blue color seems "cold".

Red

It is the color of love and passion, the color of war and blood. It is also associated with prohibitions (for example, a red traffic light) and causes aggression.

Red excites and activates a person, so we can often see it in advertising – from the whole variety of colors, we are more likely to pay attention to red.

A woman in a red dress is considered more sexually attractive than a dress of any other color.

Green

Green is the color of nature. It calms and relaxes. If a person looks at the green color, he will feel feelings of harmony and tranquility.

Yellow

This color stimulates the brain and nervous system. It is also the color of warmth and comfort, the color of joy and cheerfulness. Yellow evokes a good mood, this color is considered "optimistic".

Very popular in advertising is writing in black on a yellow background, because it is believed that this contributes to a better memorization of information.

Yellow also symbolizes betrayal and separation, but in general this color evokes joy and positive emotions.

White

White is another soothing color. White is pure, neutral, innocent and impartial. This color symbolizes perfection.

White color is associated with a blank sheet of paper, that is, with opportunities. We even say "start from scratch". But if a person does not know how to take advantage of their opportunities, white can cause melancholy.

Gray

Gray is the color of boredom, melancholy, routine, sadness. Gray is considered unemotional, insipid. Also gray color means modesty and simplicity. “Gray weekdays” – that is, boring, sad and insipid, “gray mouse” – that is, inconspicuous, quiet.

The black

Black color is associated with death, evil, darkness (night). It is the color of mourning and mystery. "Black cat", "rainy day", etc. – this color is associated with negativity.

However, it does not always cause exclusively negative emotions. If we see a girl in a black dress, we are unlikely to immediately think about death.

Another meaning of black is weight and authoritarianism. Agree that black is considered more solid than, for example, yellow.

Using color psychology

The psychology of color has a wide application, but the main areas are marketing and design.

For example, a study was conducted in which respondents were asked to choose an online store in blue or green (all other things being equal). 178 people chose blue, and only 99 green. That is, such a seemingly small thing can make a huge difference in sales.

Imagine an office. Most likely, you imagined the room in light shades, close to white. Why? As you already know, white is calming. If you make the office in bright red colors that cause aggression, it will be much more difficult for employees to cope with stress.

The same traffic light: green, natural color, as if says: “Everything is in order, relax”, while red draws attention to itself and excites a person. The other way around would not be as effective.

Now you know how color affects your mood. Use it!
