Myths about hypnosis

More and more often today we hear about hypnosis. And this is not surprising, because it is used in many areas of human activity. Hypnosis is used to rid people of psychosomatic ailments, to treat all kinds of neurotic disorders, to get rid of phobias and addictions, to unlock creative, mental and physical potential, in other words, to activate hidden reserves of personality and superpowers.

In fact, hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, during which a person can be both awake and, as it were, in a dream. In other words, hypnosis is a state when both hemispheres of the human brain are functioning, one of which interacts with consciousness, and the other with the subconscious.

These definitions can be considered correct. But, along with them today you can find a huge number of tales about hypnosis, which are also considered true, but in fact have nothing to do with the real state of affairs. So that you can be guided only by truthful information, if you suddenly encounter hypnosis in your life, we will debunk some of the most common myths about it.

Myth one: hypnosis is very dangerous

The opinion that hypnosis is dangerous to human health and life is very common. But this is absolutely not the case, and here are some data refuting this point of view:

  • In 1958, hypnotherapy was officially recognized as a treatment modality by the American Psychological Association, and in 1995, hypnotherapy was recommended for use by the National Institutes of Health.
  • The text-based database of medical and biological publications "PubMed", created by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, has data that more than 874 clinical studies have been conducted on queries "hypnosis", and the word itself appears in more than 13000 papers.
  • The practice of hypnosis is actively used in European and American commercial hospitals. With the help of it, surgical interventions are carried out that exclude the use of local anesthetics and anesthesia, as well as procedures aimed at the rapid recovery of patients suffering from a variety of diseases.
  • In history, not a single fact of a person “not leaving” a state of hypnosis has been recorded. And the people themselves, subjected to hypnotic influence, called their state during it comfortable, relaxed and colored with positive emotions. They also said that bodily sensations may not be present at all, or they may be light, pleasantly tingling, etc.

Myth two: a person under hypnosis loses consciousness

Another common myth. And it is a myth for the simple reason that a person who is in a state of hypnosis remembers and understands everything. Remember: hypnosis is not a state of sleep or unconsciousness, but a state of sleep and wakefulness at the same time.

Myth three: under hypnosis, a person can reveal all his secrets

This is also not true. The fact is that a person who has been hypnotized does not talk nonsense and does not pass a lie detector test. And he will not answer questions that he would not answer if he were conscious. Why? Yes, because he is already conscious!

Don't worry, no one will know the code for your safe with a million dollars or the password for your VKontakte page. In addition, a hypnotized person will not do anything that will go against his beliefs or will.

Myth four: under hypnosis a person loses his will

And again, another lie. The most "terrible" thing that can happen will be getting rid of the effect of mass zombies. On the contrary, your willpower can become even stronger, and your concentration and personal effectiveness can increase. Remember, hypnosis is not against the will.

Hypnosis should by no means be considered a medicine that you can take to do nothing, just lie down, indulge in fantasies, and at that time it will do all the work for you. Everything is exactly the same, but vice versa: hypnosis always implies the most active participation of a person, his personal interest and involvement in the process of solving the problem with which he decided to use hypnosis in general.

In a state of hypnosis, a person must follow the instructions given to him and pay attention to the advice he receives in order to act in accordance with them in the future. And these tips and instructions simply cannot be about anything illegal or immoral. Otherwise, the person would not agree to hypnosis.

Myth five: a person under hypnosis cannot control himself or the situation

Throughout the state of hypnosis, a person is perfectly aware of everything that happens to him, understands that he went for it himself and why he did it. In the same case, if he suddenly has a sharp desire to get out of the hypnotic state, he can do it without any problems. Hypnosis has nothing to do with helplessness. The personality of a person remains integral – the same as it was before.

Even if the hypnotherapist for some reason (or for the purpose of testing) "orders" their client to introduce the enemy and say something unpleasant, impudent, unfriendly to him, if this is unacceptable for the person, they will not follow the "order".

The situation here is completely different: a person acquires maximum control over his being and body. He can even influence his pressure, heartbeat, pain threshold, immunity, etc. And hypnosis should be taken precisely as an opportunity to regain full control over himself.

Myth #XNUMX: Some people cannot be hypnotized

Someone may say that hypnosis does not work on him, but this is by no means true. Hypnosis may not work only in a situation where a person is afraid or consciously does not want to be hypnotized.

The fact is that absolutely everyone is subject to hypnosis. It's just that everyone has their own susceptibility to it. Moreover, the same person may be susceptible to hypnosis to varying degrees at different moments and periods of life.

Myth seven: hypnosis is something otherworldly

There are people who are sure that hypnosis is associated with magic or something that, for example, is contrary to religion. This is not at all the case, because both the ability to hypnosis and the ability to undergo a hypnotic state are innate properties of a person.

The human psyche is arranged in such a way that everything unusual and unknown is perceived as terrible or dangerous. But there is no mystical background in hypnosis. And if you want more official data, then here it is: hypnosis is included in the curriculum for medical students in some American medical schools.

Myth eight: after hypnosis, a person does not remember anything

You should know that a person can lose any of his memories only at his own request. In practice, there were also cases when the subconscious of people gave the installation to a person to forget something. Yes, it is possible, but only if some event in life is very difficult to experience or keep in memory. But after all, the people themselves with whom they happened want to forget such events, which means that this is their own decision.

And if you look at this question from a different angle, then nothing can be completely forgotten – any information is stored in the subconscious, and in some cases people turn to hypnotherapists to remember something.

Myth nine: gypsy hypnosis is very dangerous

By and large, gypsy hypnosis should do justice to the superstitious people and the media, because it was they who trumpeted that this is something dangerous.

There are dishonest people and swindlers not only among the gypsies, but also among any other people. All sorts of street "businessmen" lie in wait for their victims – ordinary passers-by, immersed in their problems and unaware that a scam is coming.

The altered state of consciousness in this case is the state in which people themselves are immersed. And the main focus of scammers is on attracting the attention of a potential victim, taking possession of it and starting to “prophesy” and “cut the truth-womb”. The impact in such cases is based only on the knowledge of the intricacies of psychology, therefore, people who have undergone "gypsy hypnosis" begin to give money, gold, jewelry, etc. If the gypsies master hypnosis, then it is exactly the same as all hypnotists in general.
