Popular misconceptions about peeling

Peeling in cosmetology is a procedure by which the skin is freed from the upper layer, consisting of dead, keratinized cells. This approach to improving appearance has been known since antiquity. Today, there are several methods of such cleansing: mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, radio wave, laser, ultrasonic, etc. As a result, the skin becomes smoother, its color and tone improve, and minor defects disappear. Peeling is very popular, especially among the fairer sex: thousands of women periodically use it.

Despite the wide distribution and demand for the method, many people have a poor idea of its specifics and share misconceptions about peeling. This article is devoted to debunking the most famous of these myths.

1. Peeling affects the deep layers of the skin

The deepest cleansing procedures penetrate only the superficial layers of the dermis. Peeling is allowed at such a depth at which there are “sprout islands” – new epidermal cells subsequently grow from them. When the levels of the dermis located below these layers are injured, scar tissue is formed. Then the procedure provokes the appearance of skin irregularities, and does not contribute to its alignment.

2. Peeling removes pigmentation and removes tattoo

Tattoo ink is usually injected into the deep layers of the dermis. It is impossible to remove it with peeling. Sometimes you can get rid of a tattoo by going through a course of complex exposure, including mesotherapy with special preparations and depigmenting ingredients.

As for age spots, they have different depths and durability. If the defect does not disappear by itself within three months (three times the period of complete renewal of the epidermis), this means that the peeling will not give a positive effect either. Exfoliating treatments only help to remove superficial blemishes (such as redness resulting from acne) that would later disappear anyway.

3. Peeling helps with acne and rosacea

Peeling is considered an effective means of preventing acne, the initial stage of which is characterized by the appearance of non-inflamed comedones – “black dots”. Acne in the stage of inflammation is a contraindication to exfoliation and skin resurfacing procedures. In such a situation, phototherapy is prescribed, as well as anti-inflammatory creams and ointments.

The same can be said about rosacea. With this ailment, the skin becomes overly sensitive and becomes covered with a vascular network or pinkish spots. Couperosis is an inflammatory disease, with its exacerbations, peeling cannot be performed.

4. Deep peeling is always preferable to superficial

Deep peeling really quickly corrects skin defects. But the deeper the impact, the higher the risk of complications (inflammation, pigmentation, etc). Deep peeling should be due to serious skin problems, such as stretch marks or extensive wrinkles. The choice of procedure in this case should be agreed with an experienced doctor.

It is important to take into account the fact that several superficial procedures, as a rule, give no less noticeable cosmetic effect than a single deep peeling. Therefore, aggressive skin cleansing options should be avoided whenever possible.

5. Peeling helps get rid of scars

It is impossible to completely remove the altered tissue using peeling. Grinding procedures can partially even out scars. With the most successful outcome, a brightened smooth spot remains at the site of damage, which is easy to correct by applying foundation or powder. To achieve this effect, a complex of procedures is used, consisting of laser resurfacing, biorevitalization, plasmolifting and collagen injections.

6. Chemical peel is more effective than laser

Usually, owners of small beauty parlors that are not equipped with the appropriate equipment are trying to convince customers of this. In fact, the laser method of skin resurfacing allows you to achieve a very impressive effect and act on tissues more evenly. Peeling with concentrated organic acids carries the risk of developing a number of complications. If the patient has serious skin defects, laser peeling is preferable to chemical peeling.

If you need light exfoliating treatments, you should choose gentle cleansing methods using sugar or salt crystals, almond shells, loofah and similar popular ingredients suitable for home skin treatment.

7. You can not do peeling in the summer

In fact, this limitation applies only to deep laser resurfacing and medium-depth chemical peeling, which is done using a large amount of organic acids. Surface procedures can be carried out in the hot season. If after peeling the patient intends to go to the sea, she needs to carefully choose sunscreen cosmetics and actively use appropriate creams during the first 7-10 days in order to avoid unwanted pigmentation.

Peeling activates the processes of renewal and regeneration of tissues, gives the skin a healthy and attractive appearance. However, it should be remembered that carrying out such procedures more than twice a month can be harmful to health. When peeling on your own, it is necessary to carefully protect the delicate areas of the skin around the eyes and lips from exposure (special formulations are used for these areas), to avoid contact with aggressive components on the mucous membranes. Exfoliating products should be selected individually, taking into account the phototype of the skin and its defects.
