If a mouse doesn't eat for two days, it can easily starve to death. But why do rats gnaw on the lead coating of cables or concrete? These animals need sharp teeth, and since their teeth grow throughout their lives, they have to constantly grind and sharpen them.

Yes, they do. A striking example is a type of jellyfish that lives in the Pacific Ocean near the Great Barrier Reef. If attacked, this jellyfish releases substances that attract predatory sharks. The same happens if the jellyfish is wounded or torn apart.

How this mechanism evolved is unclear, but the fact is evident: just inflict even a cut on this cnidarian, and sharks start gathering at the site, searching for food.

Water is stored not in the humps but throughout the camel's body. The humps are used for storing fat and protecting against the scorching rays of the sun.

The mystery of the strange circles has been solved. Scientists call South American bats vampires due to the similarity of their diet to that of mythical creatures. These bats are unique in that, when cutting a piece of skin, they moisten the wound with saliva containing anticoagulants and lick the oozing blood, which does not clot even after the animal has had its fill.

There have been no recorded fatal cases directly caused by a vampire's bite. However, many people have died from rabies, which these creatures can transmit to animals and humans.

In reality, the koala is a marsupial. It's a small herbivorous animal that spends most of its life on its favorite eucalyptus trees. During the day, the koala sleeps, perched on a tree branch, and at night, it climbs trees searching for food. Even when the koala isn't sleeping, it usually sits motionless for hours. The koala is motionless 16–18 hours a day.

Many animals thrive when placed in a zoo. Our closest relatives in the animal world — higher primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans — live significantly longer in zoo enclosures than in the wild, provided they are well taken care of.

The natural shades of polar bear fur range from dark gray to yellowish. However, their skin is dark, almost black. This isn't just nature's whim but a useful adaptation that allows the bear to warm up in the sun, despite the light-reflecting color of its fur.

There was a case when a polar bear turned green. This happened in the Moscow Zoo. It turned out that single-celled algae settled and began multiplying in the bear's hair due to humidity and high temperatures, giving the bear such an unusual tint.

The Texas horned lizard lives in North America. In case of danger, if it fails to hide, it inflates to almost double its size and raises all its scales and projections. If the predator is undeterred by this display, the lizard has a final defense: it shoots its own blood from the corners of its eyes into the mouth of the attacker. Its blood is slightly toxic and has a bad taste, often causing the predator to retreat.

Lemmings are small rodents that resemble hamsters. In the harsh northern conditions, sometimes food becomes unexpectedly abundant, but then, just as suddenly, these creatures face winter. The amount of food decreases dramatically, and lemmings set out in search of it. Encountering a body of water, they gather on the shores, unable to turn back. Gradually, the rear rows push the front ones into the water, where the unlucky ones, after a brief swim, drown.

If a mongoose allows itself to be bitten, it will die faster than a human. Mongooses don't seek out fights with snakes, as Kipling describes, and when they encounter one, they try not to attack but to retreat.

It's worth mentioning that mongooses are so agile that they almost always manage to dodge snake bites. Additionally, they are protected by their bristled hair and thick skin during a fight.
